The best one-handed games for a crowded commute
Standing on a packed train with one hand on a pole is the true test of mobile game design. If a game needs two thumbs and precise timing, it's staying in my pocket. Here's what actually survives the commute.
Portrait orientation is the first thing I look for. A game you can hold and play in one hand, thumb reaching everything, is worth its weight in gold. Emberfall Legends surprised me here, since its tap-and-hold combat works fine one-handed once you get used to it.
Games with a pause-anywhere design are the safest bet, because commutes are unpredictable. You get interrupted, you need to move, someone squeezes past. A game that punishes you for looking away isn't a commute game.
Avoid tilt controls on public transport unless you enjoy people watching you sway your phone around. Touch-only games are the way to go here, and thankfully most of the good ones offer that option.
My current commute rotation is a mix of a turn-based RPG for the longer legs and a quick casual stacker for the short hops. Match the game to the journey and the ride flies by.
